Series Overview

The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy was hosted by England and Wales in June 2017 and produced one of cricket's most stunning upsets. Pakistan entered the eight-team tournament ranked eighth in the world — the lowest-ranked side — and began disastrously, losing their opening group match against India by 124 runs. They recovered to reach the semi-finals and then the final at The Oval in London, where they faced the same Indian side that had demolished them in the group stage. The final was no contest. Pakistan's openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman put on an opening partnership of 128, and Zaman then reached his maiden ODI century in what was his first ICC major event final, eventually scoring 114. Pakistan posted an imposing 338/4 from 50 overs. India's chase never got started — Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali shared wickets as India were bowled out for 158, handing Pakistan victory by 180 runs. The winning margin was the largest in any ICC final. Hasan Ali had been the standout performer throughout the tournament, taking wickets in every match he played. His 13 wickets at 14.0 earned him the Player of the Tournament award. Pakistan's victory — from the lowest seed, having lost their group game against the same opponent — remains one of the most improbable and celebrated results in ODI cricket history.
