About this Ground

Mumbai's first international cricket ground. Historic CCI venue that hosted the 2006 CT Final and 2013 Women's CWC Final.

History & Significance

Brabourne Stadium, built in 1937 for the Cricket Club of India and named after the then-Governor of Bombay, Lord Brabourne, holds a unique place in Indian cricket history: it was Mumbai's first fully appointed international cricket ground, hosting Test matches from 1948 onwards. The stadium is tucked into the Churchgate area of Mumbai, surrounded by the city's colonial-era architecture, with the Arabian Sea visible beyond its stands on clear days. Unlike the Wankhede Stadium a short distance away โ€” which replaced Brabourne as Mumbai's primary Test ground in 1975 after a dispute between the CCI and the Mumbai Cricket Association โ€” Brabourne has continued to host cricket at a lower profile, functioning as a domestic venue and an ICC event ground. Its most significant international moments in the modern era came in hosting two global finals: the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy Final, where Australia defeated West Indies via the Duckworth-Lewis method to claim the title, and the 2013 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Final, where Australia beat West Indies by 114 runs. Both results favoured Australia. The ground retains a distinctive atmosphere: its moderate capacity of around 20,000, proximity to the sea, and Art Deco pavilion give it a character that larger modern venues cannot replicate.
