About this Ground

Barbados's iconic cricket ground, host of the 2007 World Cup Final and Viv Richards' finest innings territory.

History & Significance

Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, has been the spiritual home of West Indian cricket since its establishment in 1882. Located a short distance from Barbados's capital, close to the sea and often bathed in Caribbean sunlight, it is one of cricket's most atmospheric venues β€” intimate, warm, and deeply connected to the island's identity. Barbados has contributed more West Indian Test cricketers per capita than any other territory: Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Clyde Walcott, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Wes Hall, and Gordon Greenidge all made it their home ground. The Oval hosted the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup Final β€” a match marred by rain, reduced via Duckworth-Lewis, and somewhat unsatisfyingly resolved β€” between Australia and Sri Lanka. But the ground's true defining moment came in 1979: Viv Richards' 138* in the ODI World Cup Final, accompanied by Gordon Greenidge's 53 and Collis King's blistering 86, turned Kensington Oval into the stage for one of cricket's supreme individual performances. West Indies won by 92 runs, retaining the World Cup. In 2010, Kensington Oval hosted the Women's T20 World Cup Final, where Australia defeated New Zealand by 3 runs in one of the most dramatic closes in the tournament's history. For West Indian cricket, no ground carries more historical weight than Kensington Oval.
