What is the Orange Cap?

The Orange Cap is the IPL's award for the leading run scorer of the season. Introduced in the inaugural 2008 edition, it is physically presented as a bright orange cricket cap and is worn by whoever currently leads the run-scoring charts after every match. The cap changes heads as the standings shift, so the same player can wear it for an over and lose it before the next one.

The all-time record is Virat Kohli's 973 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2016 — a tally widely considered the greatest single T20 league season by any batter. Australia's David Warner is the only three-time winner, taking the cap home in 2015, 2017 and 2019 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chris Gayle is the only player to win it in consecutive years (2011 and 2012), both for RCB.

The Orange Cap is awarded irrespective of which team reaches the playoffs, meaning a player from an eliminated side can still take it home. The IPL 2026 winner was Vaibhav Suryavanshi — a 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener whose 776 runs at a 230+ strike rate made him the youngest Orange Cap holder in IPL history. Shubman Gill (732) and Sai Sudharsan (722) finished second and third for finalists Gujarat Titans.
