That victory pushed England to the top of the ICC T20I rankings — a remarkable achievement given where they sat 12 months earlier.

The format switch to ODIs immediately reversed the dynamic. India, who had beaten England 3-0 in the last bilateral ODI series (India, February 2025), arrived at Edgbaston with a clear plan: Jasprit Bumrah returning to 50-over cricket for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup.
