Sir Alastair Cook is England's greatest Test run-scorer of all time — the only Englishman to pass 10,000 Test runs and the holder of virtually every England batting record. The Essex left-hander played 161 Tests for England between 2006 and 2018, scoring 12,472 runs at an average of 44.88 with 33 centuries. He also holds the England record for most Test matches (161), most Test innings (291) and most Test centuries (33). Cook was a technically orthodox, mentally formidable opening batter — not the most attractive strokemaker but possessed of extraordinary concentration, determination and ability to build long innings in all conditions.

Early Career and Debut Hundred

Cook made his Test debut against India in 2006 and scored a century on debut — a sign of things to come. He established himself quickly as England's most reliable opener, forming important partnerships with Marcus Trescothick and later Andrew Strauss. His debut century at Nagpur was scored on a difficult pitch against a quality attack, immediately demonstrating the mental solidity that would characterise his entire career. He won the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11 as vice-captain, scoring 766 runs in the series — one of England's finest individual Ashes performances.

Captaincy and Retirement

Cook captained England in 59 Tests between 2012 and 2016, winning 24 and losing 22. His captaincy included England's 3-0 Ashes win in 2013 and a successful 2013-14 Ashes defence that started promisingly before deteriorating. He stepped down from the captaincy in 2016 and continued as a batsman. His final Test, against India at The Oval in 2018, was one of the most emotional in English cricket history — he scored 71 in his final innings to a standing ovation from the capacity crowd.

Cook was knighted in the 2019 New Year Honours — one of the fastest cricketers to receive a knighthood after retirement, reflecting both his records and his service to English cricket. He scored centuries against every Test-playing nation during his career.
