Beth Mooney — Australia's World-Class Women's Opening Batter
Beth Mooney's batting record, her role as Australia's opener, career highs in T20Is and ODIs, and why she became the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year 2022.
Beth Mooney is Australia's premier women's batter — a composed, technically excellent opening batter who has broken multiple records in T20 international cricket. Named ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2022, she has been the cornerstone of Australia's batting across all three formats throughout the 2020s.
T20 International Records
Mooney is Australia's leading run-scorer in Women's T20Is. She became the first Australian woman to pass 3,000 T20I runs and has consistently averaged above 45 in the format — exceptional for a format where averages typically hover around 25–30 for top batters. She is known for her ability to anchor an innings while maintaining a strike rate above 120.
2020 T20 World Cup Final
Mooney's defining moment came at the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup Final at Melbourne Cricket Ground — 86,174 fans, still the world record attendance for a women's sporting event. Australia beat India comprehensively, with Mooney top-scoring with 78* not out. Her ability to bat through an entire T20 innings — starting in the powerplay and finishing at the death — was the defining quality of that tournament-winning performance.
Brisbane Heat and WBBL
In the Women's Big Bash League, Mooney has been Brisbane Heat's standout batter for many seasons, consistently topping the run-scoring charts. The WBBL has helped develop her game further, giving her exposure to high-quality domestic competition that has fed into her international performances.
