Brian Lara: West Indies' Greatest Batsman, World Record 400 Not Out and 375 in Tests

Brian Lara is widely regarded as the greatest batsman in West Indies cricket history and one of the finest in the history of the game. Born in Trinidad in 1969, he scored the highest individual innings in Test cricket history: 400 not out against England at the Recreation Ground, St John's, Antigua, in April 2004. He had previously held the record with 375, scored at the same ground against England in April 1994. In ODIs, he scored 10,405 runs at an average of 40.48. In Tests, he scored 11,953 runs at 52.88 with 34 centuries in 131 Tests. He is the only batsman to have held the world record for the highest Test innings twice.

Brian Charles Lara was born on 2 May 1969 in Cantaro, Santa Cruz, Trinidad. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1990 and established himself as an extraordinary talent within his first few series. His batting was characterised by an unusually high, looping backlift; the ability to hit the ball through the off side with breathtaking timing; and a capacity for long innings at the highest level. By the early 1990s, he was being compared — favourably — to Viv Richards and Garfield Sobers as the greatest West Indian batsman of his generation. In county cricket, he scored 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in June 1994 — the highest score in first-class cricket history — in the same year he set the Test record of 375.

The Two World Records: 375 in 1994 and 400 Not Out in 2004

Lara set his first world record for the highest individual Test innings in April 1994 against England at the Recreation Ground in St John's, Antigua, scoring 375 from 538 balls in a total of 593 for 5 declared. The innings lasted 12 hours and 46 minutes. It surpassed Garfield Sobers' record of 365 not out, which had stood since 1958. The record was taken from Lara in 1999 when Matthew Hayden scored 380 against Zimbabwe. Lara reclaimed it on 10 April 2004 — again against England, again at the Recreation Ground in Antigua — scoring 400 not out from 582 balls over four days. He became the only batsman in Test history to have held the highest individual innings record twice. The 400 not out remains the world record.

Career Statistics and Legacy

Lara's Test career — 11,953 runs in 131 Tests at 52.88 with 34 centuries — places him sixth on the all-time list of Test run-scorers. His career coincided with the decline of West Indian cricket from its period of global dominance (1976-1995) to a team that struggled in international competition, which means he regularly carried the batting against strong opponents with limited support. His 153 not out against Australia in the 1999 World Cup group stage at Sabina Park is considered one of the greatest ODI innings played. In 2006, he announced his Test retirement before reversing the decision; he finally retired from all cricket in April 2007 after the West Indies' first-round exit from the 2007 World Cup (hosted in the Caribbean). He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2012.
