Brian Charles Lara is one of the most celebrated cricketers of the 20th and 21st century — a left-handed batter from Santa Cruz, Trinidad who scored 11,953 Test runs at an average of 52.88 with 34 centuries. He is the holder of two of cricket's most prized records: the highest individual score in first-class cricket (501 not out for Warwickshire vs Durham in 1994) and the highest individual innings in Test cricket (400 not out for West Indies vs England at Antigua in 2004). Lara also held the previous Test record of 375 against England in 1994 before Matthew Hayden briefly broke it in 2003 (380 vs Zimbabwe) — whereupon Lara reclaimed the record the following year with his 400 not out. His batting was characterised by a high backlift, extraordinary wrist action, a wide range of attacking shots and an ability to play innings of crushing length and quality. Unlike many of cricket's greatest batters, Lara played much of his career in a declining West Indian side — his ability to single-handedly sustain the team's competitiveness in an era when West Indian cricket was struggling made his achievements even more remarkable.

The 375 and 400 Not Out

Lara's 375 against England at Antigua in 1994 — breaking Gary Sobers' record of 365 not out set in 1958 — was one of cricket's most anticipated records and when it came, was accompanied by a pitch invasion of jubilant Antiguans. Ten years later, with Matthew Hayden having briefly surpassed him, Lara reclaimed the record with 400 not out against England at the same ground — Antigua Recreation Ground — as if the personal connection to the venue was too strong to resist. The 400 was scored over two days; Lara was on 313 overnight and completed the record on the second morning.

Leadership and Difficult Years

Lara captained West Indies through some of the most difficult years in Caribbean cricket history — the late 1990s and 2000s saw the side decline from their dominant era. His captaincy was sometimes criticised for inconsistency, but his batting achievements in this period — including 688 runs in the 1999 series against Australia, which West Indies won under his captaincy — demonstrated his individual excellence regardless of team context.

Lara's first-class record of 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994 is the highest score in any first-class cricket match in history. He scored it in a single day — batting from 9:40 am to 6:17 pm without being dismissed. The innings broke Hanif Mohammad's record of 499 that had stood since 1959.
