Brian Charles Lara is widely regarded as the greatest left-handed batter in cricket history and one of the most gifted strokemakers the game has ever seen. Born in Trinidad in 1969, he represented West Indies from 1990 to 2007, accumulating 11,953 Test runs at an average of 52.88 and 10,405 ODI runs.

The Record-Breaking Innings

Lara set the record for the highest individual Test innings twice. In 1994 he scored 375 against England in Antigua, breaking Garfield Sobers' 36-year-old record. Gary Kirsten equalled it in 1997, and Matthew Hayden then surpassed it with 380 in 2003. Lara responded emphatically in 2004, scoring 400 not out against England in the same venue — Antigua Recreation Ground — to reclaim the record, where it still stands.

First-Class Record: 501 Not Out

In 1994, playing for Warwickshire against Durham in county cricket, Lara also broke the first-class batting record with 501 not out — the highest individual score in first-class cricket. He hit 308 runs in one afternoon session. This made Lara the first and only player to hold both the Test and first-class scoring records simultaneously.

Lara's flowing backlift and high follow-through produced an exceptionally elegant batting style. His cover drive — full-face of the bat, leaning into the ball — was described by Sir Viv Richards as 'poetry in motion.'

Career and Legacy

Lara often carried a struggling West Indies batting lineup almost single-handedly. He scored four consecutive Test centuries against Australia in 1999 during a series West Indies lost. He led West Indies in two World Cups and retired in 2007 as the leading Test run-scorer at that time, before Tendulkar eventually overtook him. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2012.
