Front Foot Play in Cricket: Driving, Defending and Controlling Full Balls

Front foot play is the cornerstone of attacking batting — understanding when and how to come forward to drive and defend full deliveries is fundamental to scoring runs.

Front foot play refers to all batting strokes where the front foot drives forward toward the pitch of the ball. It is the primary weapon against full-length deliveries — half-volleys and full tosses — where the batter can reach the bounce of the ball and drive with full power and control.

Front Foot Defence

The front foot defensive push is the most fundamental stroke in cricket. The front foot strides toward the pitch of the ball, the bat comes down in a straight line, and the face angles slightly downward at contact to keep the ball in the ground. The head is over the ball, the hands are soft, and there is no follow-through. Mastering this stroke is the foundation of a sound defensive technique.

The Front Foot Drive

The front foot drive is used to attack the full-pitched delivery. The front foot lunges toward the ball, the bat comes through with a full swing, and the ball is struck cleanly through the off side (cover drive, straight drive) or on side (on-drive). Weight transfers fully onto the front foot through the shot, and the follow-through goes high, past the shoulder.

The most common cause of driving into the air is failing to reach the pitch of the ball. If you find your drives going high, move your front foot further down the pitch — get as close to the ball as possible before swinging.

Using Your Feet to Spin

Front foot play against spin bowling often involves aggressive footwork — leaving the crease to 'get to the pitch of the ball' and negate turn. When the ball pitches in the batter's arc, the batter can drive with the spin or smother the turn. Over-reliance on the back foot against spin allows the ball to turn sharply and creates LBW and stumping opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

What is front foot play in cricket?

Front foot play involves stepping forward with the front foot to meet full-pitched deliveries. It includes the front foot defence and all varieties of the drive: cover drive, straight drive, and on-drive.

How do I hit better front foot drives?

Get your front foot as close to the ball as possible, keep your head still and over the ball, drive with a full straight bat, and follow through high. Practise in the nets with full-pitched throw-downs targeted at the half-volley length.
