India vs South Africa Tests 2023-24: Series Drawn 1-1 — Bumrah 12 Wickets Player of Series, Dean Elgar's 185 Farewell, SA Bowled Out for 55 at Cape Town

The India tour of South Africa Tests December 2023-January 2024 ended drawn 1-1 across 2 Tests. Jasprit Bumrah took 12 wickets across both Tests to win Player of the Series. 1st Test (26-28 December, SuperSport Park Centurion): South Africa won by an innings and 32 runs — Elgar scored 185, India collapsed for 245 and 131. 2nd Test (3-4 January, Newlands Cape Town): India won by 7 wickets — South Africa bowled out for 55 in their first innings, India winning in 2 days. Rohit Sharma captained India; Temba Bavuma captained South Africa (Dean Elgar captained the Cape Town Test after Bavuma's hamstring injury). Dean Elgar retired from all cricket after the Cape Town Test.

Dean Elgar's 185 at Centurion: A Farewell Innings in His Final Home Series

Dean Elgar scoring 185 at SuperSport Park Centurion — the second-highest score of his career — in what would prove to be his penultimate Test innings gave the 1st Test of the 2023-24 India series its defining individual batting contribution: South Africa's retiring captain and most experienced batter producing a near-double century against India's full-strength attack (Bumrah, Siraj, Ashwin, Jadeja) in a match South Africa won by an innings and 32 runs. Elgar's 185 — batting with the authority and attacking intent that characterized his Centurion home record (where his left-handed strokeplay and pull shot against pace had produced multiple career-best performances) — gave South Africa the large first-innings total (408 all out) that India's batting (245 and 131) could not approach. The Centurion pitch, with its traditionally fast and bouncy surface, rewarding Elgar's technique that had been developed specifically for South African home conditions across 15 years of Test cricket. Elgar captaining the Cape Town 2nd Test (after Bavuma's hamstring injury ended Bavuma's participation) — his farewell Test, played at Newlands — produced a different result: South Africa bowled out for 55 in their first innings and India winning by 7 wickets, giving Elgar an on-field defeat in his final match rather than the Centurion win he had hoped to close on.

South Africa Bowled Out for 55 at Cape Town: Bumrah's Demolition

South Africa being bowled out for 55 in their 1st innings at Newlands Cape Town — their lowest home total in that era — gave Jasprit Bumrah's 2nd Test performance its most dramatic single-innings result: India's pace spearhead generating the pace, movement, and bounce from Cape Town's historically pace-friendly surface to dismiss South Africa's batting for 55, the match ending in 2 days with India winning by 7 wickets. Bumrah's 12-wicket series total across both Tests — contributing to SA's Centurion innings and the Cape Town 55 all-out — winning the Player of the Series reflected his bilateral impact: in a 1-1 drawn series, the individual bowler whose wickets were decisive across both matches despite being on opposite-result teams (India losing 1st Test, winning 2nd) was Bumrah. South Africa's 55 at Newlands — coming from a team that had won by an innings in Centurion 8 days earlier — confirmed the bilateral volatility that Newlands' surfaces historically produce when India's pace attack (Bumrah, Siraj) generates sustained movement off the Cape Town pitches against South Africa's batting.

India in South Africa Tests 2023-24 in Context

The India tour of South Africa Tests December 2023-January 2024 — SuperSport Park Centurion and Newlands Cape Town — produced a 1-1 drawn series with Bumrah's 12-wicket Player of the Series, Elgar's 185 farewell innings at Centurion, South Africa's 55 all-out at Cape Town, and two contrasting results at opposite-character venues in the same bilateral. Rohit Sharma's India — among the top-3 WTC ranking teams entering the series — drawing 1-1 in South Africa (having previously beaten SA 3-0 at home in 2019) reflected the continued bilateral challenge that South Africa's home conditions (especially Centurion and Cape Town) provide even against the world's strongest Test batting attacks. India's Cape Town win (by 7 wickets after SA's 55 all-out) gave the series the competitive result from both sides without a team dominating across 2 Tests.
