Pakistan vs South Africa Tests 2021: Pakistan Win 2-0 — Rizwan Player of Series, Hasan Ali 12 Wickets, Babar vs De Kock, SA's First Pakistan Tour in 14 Years

Pakistan won the South Africa Test series January-February 2021 by 2-0 across 2 Tests. Mohammad Rizwan won Player of the Series. Hasan Ali took 12 wickets across the series (including 5/54 and 5/60 in the 2nd Test). Babar Azam captained Pakistan; Quinton de Kock captained South Africa. Tests: 1st at National Stadium, Karachi (Pakistan won by 7 wickets); 2nd at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium (Pakistan won by 95 runs). South Africa's first Test tour of Pakistan in 14 years — a landmark bilateral return of international cricket.

South Africa's First Test Tour of Pakistan in 14 Years: International Cricket Returns

South Africa touring Pakistan for Test cricket in January-February 2021 — their first Test tour of Pakistani soil in 14 years, since 2007 — gave the series its primary historical significance alongside the bilateral result: Pakistan rehabilitating itself as an international Test cricket host following the 2009 Lahore attack on the Sri Lanka team bus, with South Africa becoming one of the early Test nations to return to Pakistan for bilateral Test cricket after the extended security-enforced absence. Pakistan having used UAE neutral venues for their home bilateral programme from 2009 through 2019 (with limited-overs international cricket slowly returning to Pakistan in the intervening years through PSL matches and isolated series) meant South Africa's 2021 Test tour represented a meaningful step in Pakistan's restoration as a full Test host: a major Test nation willing to tour Pakistan for a 2-Test bilateral rather than insisting on UAE neutrality. The 2021 South Africa series followed Zimbabwe hosting Pakistan in 2021 (limited-overs) and Bangladesh touring Pakistan in 2020 for limited-overs cricket, with the South Africa Tests being the most significant bilateral return to Pakistan in the post-2009 period alongside Australia's 2022 Test tour.

Hasan Ali 12 Wickets and Mohammad Rizwan Player of the Series

Hasan Ali taking 12 wickets across the 2-Test series — including 5/54 and 5/60 in the 2nd Rawalpindi Test — gave Pakistan their series-defining bowling performance: the Gujranwala right-arm pace-swing bowler exploiting Pakistan's home conditions (Karachi's lateral seam movement in early over, Rawalpindi's bounce and swing) to restrict South Africa's batting across two Test match innings twice. Hasan Ali's 5/60 and 5/54 in Rawalpindi — both hauls in the same Test — gave him 10 wickets in a single match (the 2nd Test) and 12 across the bilateral, the most decisive individual bowling contribution in a series where Pakistan won both Tests by significant margins. Mohammad Rizwan winning the Player of the Series reflected his batting contributions across both Karachi and Rawalpindi — Pakistan's wicketkeeper-batter's attacking middle-order innings building on first-innings scores that Hasan Ali's bowling could then defend. Aiden Markram's 227 runs (South Africa's leading run-scorer across the series) showed competitive South Africa batting despite the 2-0 series defeat.

Pakistan vs South Africa Tests 2021 in Context

The Pakistan vs South Africa Test series January-February 2021 — Karachi and Rawalpindi — produced Pakistan winning 2-0 (Karachi by 7 wickets, Rawalpindi by 95 runs), Rizwan's Player of the Series, Hasan Ali's 12 wickets, and South Africa's first Test tour of Pakistan in 14 years. The diplomatic significance (SA returning to Pakistan for bilateral Tests, furthering Pakistan's post-2009 rehabilitation as a Test host) combined with Babar's 2-0 debut as Test captain, Hasan Ali's 10-wicket 2nd Test, and Pakistan's comprehensive bilateral dominance on home conditions gave the 2021 series its multiple layers of context. Pakistan's subsequent Test hosting milestones (Australia's 2022 tour — first since 1998, England's 2022-23 return — first since 2005) built directly on the confidence established by South Africa's 2021 visit as one of the first major Test nations to commit to Pakistan bilateral cricket post-2009.
