The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is Pakistan's premier T20 franchise competition, established in 2016. It was initially played entirely in the United Arab Emirates due to security concerns about hosting international cricket in Pakistan, but has progressively moved to Pakistani venues — Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan and Peshawar — as security conditions improved. The PSL has revived Pakistan's cricketing infrastructure and drawn significant global cricket interest back to the country.

The Six PSL Franchises

The six PSL teams are: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. Islamabad United were the PSL's first champions and among the most successful franchises. Lahore Qalandars, who went through several early seasons without a title, became one of the competition's dominant forces in recent years. All franchises have strong local fan bases reflecting Pakistan's regional cricket rivalries.

Competition Structure

The PSL features a double round-robin group stage followed by playoffs. The top four teams qualify for Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the final. The final is traditionally the showpiece match of Pakistan's domestic T20 calendar, held in Karachi or Lahore and watched by millions. The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) controls the PSL through a franchise auction structure where team owners bid for players in a tiered draft.

The PSL's gradual shift to Pakistan was a deliberate strategy by the PCB. By hosting matches in Lahore and Karachi — venues that had been largely off-limits to international cricket since the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team bus — the PCB demonstrated to the ICC and other boards that Pakistan could safely host elite cricket. This eventually contributed to Test cricket returning to Pakistan, with England and Australia touring in subsequent years.

International Players and Development

The PSL draft includes international players across five categories: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver and Emerging. The Emerging category is specifically for young Pakistani talent, giving the competition a development function alongside its entertainment role. International players from England, West Indies, South Africa and Australia have regularly played in the PSL, raising its global profile and giving Pakistani players exposure to different playing styles.

Frequently asked questions

When did the PSL first host matches in Pakistan?

The PSL played its first matches on Pakistani soil in 2017, when the final was held in Lahore — the first major international-quality cricket event in the city since the 2009 attack. Matches gradually moved to Pakistan over subsequent seasons, with the 2020 PSL being the first season played entirely in Pakistan.

How are PSL player categories determined?

The PCB assigns players to PSL draft categories (Platinum through Emerging) based on ICC rankings, recent international performance, and market value. Platinum players are the most expensive; Emerging players are young prospects, primarily Pakistani. Each franchise must have a balanced squad across categories, preventing any team from buying all the premium players.
