SA20 Season 2 (2024): Sunrisers Eastern Cape Win Back-to-Back Titles With 89-Run Demolition of Durban's Super Giants

Sunrisers Eastern Cape became the first back-to-back SA20 champions on 10 February 2024, demolishing Durban's Super Giants by 89 runs in the Season 2 final at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. Sunrisers posted 204/3 from their 20 overs — anchored by Tom Abell's 55 off 34 balls and Tristan Stubbs' unbeaten 56 off 30 — then bowled Durban out for just 115 in 17 overs, with Marco Jansen's 5/30 the decisive bowling spell. The margin confirmed Sunrisers' dominance: in both SA20 seasons they had contested to this point, they had won the title, and their combination of batting depth and fast-bowling quality proved the most effective squad formula in the competition.

Marco Jansen: 5/30 in the Final

Marco Jansen's 5/30 in the SA20 Season 2 final was one of the most dominant individual bowling performances in any T20 franchise final. The tall Sunrisers left-arm seamer — who at the time of the final was 23 years old — produced a spell that dismantled Durban's Super Giants' chase from the opening overs. Jansen's 5-wicket haul in a franchise final is a rare achievement in T20 cricket: the combination of pace, bounce, and swing that comes with his 6'7" action made him virtually unplayable on the Newlands surface. Jansen also finished as the SA20 Season 2 leading wicket-taker with 20 wickets across the competition.

Ryan Rickelton: 530 Runs, Season's Top Scorer

Ryan Rickelton (MI Cape Town) was the top run-scorer of SA20 Season 2 with 530 runs — the most by any batter in the competition. Rickelton's performance came despite MI Cape Town not winning the title in Season 2 (they would win Season 3 in 2025). His 530-run total placed him as one of the most consistent SA20 batters across the competition's first two seasons, and his average and strike rate across the tournament established him as a priority pick for MI Cape Town's franchise planning in subsequent seasons.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape's SA20 Dynasty

Sunrisers Eastern Cape's back-to-back SA20 championships in 2023 and 2024 established them as the competition's first dynasty — two consecutive titles in a competition's first two editions represents complete dominance of the early-era landscape. They went on to win SA20 Season 4 (2026) as well, cementing their position as the competition's most decorated franchise through the first four seasons. Their success is built on a squad philosophy that prioritises South African-qualified fast bowlers (Jansen, Ottniel Baartman) combined with overseas batting firepower and smart retention of players who understand the Eastern Cape franchise's identity.
