Read explainerFormats — Cricket Guides
Cricket is played across three international formats and dozens of domestic and franchise competitions. Each format has its own tactics, records, and culture — understanding the differences is the key to appreciating why players approach the game differently depending on the context.
Test cricket is the oldest and most demanding form of the game. Played over up to five days with two innings per side, it tests every aspect of a cricketer's skill — concentration, technique under pressure, the ability to adapt to a deteriorating pitch, and the mental stamina to sustain a long spell of fielding or a marathon innings. The World Test Championship (WTC), introduced in 2019–21 as a two-year cycle, gives Test cricket a structure it previously lacked: every Test series now carries points toward the final, played between the top two sides at Lord's or The Oval. Australia won the inaugural final (2021) and the second (2023) against India, cementing their Test dominance in the early WTC era.
One-Day International (ODI) cricket gives each team 50 overs (300 deliveries) to bat. Introduced in 1971 after a Ashes Test was washed out and the teams played a hastily arranged one-day game, ODIs now host the ICC Cricket World Cup — the sport's biggest prize. The 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord's, resolved on boundary count after a Super Over also tied, is widely considered the most dramatic game in cricket history. The format has evolved enormously since the 1970s: batting and bowling strike rates, fielding athleticism, and the quality of death bowling (the last ten overs) have all been transformed by T20 cricket's influence.
Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket reduced the game to 20 overs per side, typically completed in under three hours. India's unexpected triumph at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 — under the then-unknown captaincy of MS Dhoni — transformed cricket's commercial landscape and led to the creation of the IPL in 2008. The IPL, PSL, BBL, CPL, SA20, The Hundred, and ILT20 are all franchise T20 leagues that now sit at the heart of cricket's calendar and economy. Players auction for tens of millions of dollars; coaching staffs import tactics from one continent to another; and T20-specific skills — the ramp shot, the switch hit, death bowling variations — have become as valued as classical Test-match technique.
The distinctions between formats go far beyond format length. Test cricket uses a red ball that seams and swings more in overcast English conditions and wears dramatically over five days in subcontinent heat, allowing spin bowling to dominate the final two days. ODIs use a white ball under lights (day-night games) with strict fielding restrictions and a mandatory Powerplay. T20Is push batting templates to their limits: every batter now has a repertoire of unconventional shots, and bowlers must master four or five different ball types to stay effective across all phases. These guides cover the full spectrum — from the history of each format to the tactical debates that define modern cricket.
