Yashasvi Jaiswal: India's Prolific Test Opener, Triple Century in Domestic Cricket, and Early International Success
Yashasvi Jaiswal (India) made his Test debut in 2023 and immediately became India's most exciting young opener. He scored 712 Test runs in the 2023–24 Border-Gavaskar Trophy vs Australia (including 161 in Perth) — the most by any Indian batter in the series. He earlier set records in domestic cricket: 203 vs Jammu & Kashmir (2022) and a triple century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, he scored the most runs in IPL 2024 (435). Born in UP but representing Mumbai, his is a rags-to-riches cricket story.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was born in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh in December 2001. He grew up in poverty in Mumbai — famously selling fruit at the Azad Maidan cricket grounds as a teenager while playing cricket. He was discovered by coach Jwala Singh, who provided food and coaching support. His domestic career began at 17 with Mumbai and he made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2020.
International Breakthrough
Jaiswal made his Test debut in July 2023 vs West Indies and scored 171 in his second Test. He became one of the youngest Indians to score a Test century. In the 2023–24 series vs England in India (series won 4–1), he scored 712 runs — the most by an Indian opener in a home series. In the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he scored 161 in Perth's first Test (the first India vs Australia Test at the new Optus Stadium) and was consistently impressive throughout the series.
Domestic Records
Before his Test debut, Jaiswal had exceptional domestic records: a triple century (300+) in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI domestic), making him one of the youngest batters to achieve this feat. He scored 203 for Mumbai vs Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy. His IPL 2024 season (435 runs for Rajasthan Royals) was the most runs by any player in IPL 2024's group stage. He established himself as the most in-form young opener in Indian cricket.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the other young Indian cricketers emerging as future stars alongside Jaiswal, and what is the state of India's batting depth?
India's next generation: batting depth and emerging stars (2023–2025). India's talent pipeline is the deepest in world cricket. Key emerging batters alongside Jaiswal: Shubman Gill (Punjab, born 1999): Test debut 2020. Scored 128 vs Sri Lanka in ODI (2023), Test centuries vs Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Averaged 46+ in Tests through 2024. Considered the most technically complete young Indian batter. Earmarked as Kohli's long-term successor at No. 3–4. Ishan Kishan (Jharkhand, born 1998): debut 2021. Scored the fastest double century in ODI history (210 off 131 balls, vs Bangladesh, 2022). Wicketkeeper-batter; competes with Sanju Samson for the wicketkeeper slot. Tilak Varma (Hyderabad, born 2002): T20I debut 2023. Scored back-to-back centuries in T20Is vs West Indies (2023) — the first player to do so on debut. Middle-order specialist with exceptional timing. Rinku Singh (UP, born 1997): became famous for hitting 5 consecutive sixes off the last 5 balls of a Kolkata Knight Riders IPL match vs Gujarat Titans (2023) to win from an impossible situation. T20I debut 2023. Devdutt Padikkal (Karnataka, born 2000): Ranji Trophy centuries at 19; left-hand opener. The depth: India's selection dilemma is not lack of talent but abundance — multiple world-class batters compete for 5 batting slots. Some players (Samson, Kishan) have been unable to cement their places despite outstanding IPL performances because the Test XI has no room. This depth, unprecedented in world cricket, ensures India's batting will remain elite for the next decade.
