Series Overview
The inaugural 2020 Lanka Premier League was played in Sri Lanka during the tail end of the global pandemic, with matches split between Hambantota and Colombo. Five franchises competed in a round-robin and knockout format. The final, played on 16 December 2020 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota, matched Jaffna Stallions against Galle Gladiators. Pakistan veteran Shoaib Malik top-scored in the final with 46, and Thisara Perera's extraordinary cameo — 39 not out from just 14 balls — provided the explosive finishing that pushed Jaffna Stallions to a total Galle Gladiators could not chase. Stallions won by 53 runs. The franchise was later renamed Jaffna Kings. The LPL's inaugural edition established a pattern that would define the tournament's early years: Jaffna Kings winning everything. With titles also in 2021 and 2022, the franchise created one of T20 cricket's most dominant early runs in any new tournament.
