How the IPL 2026 Points Table Works

The IPL 2026 points table ranks every team by points accumulated across completed league-stage matches. A win earns two points; a no-result match typically awards one point to each side; a defeat yields zero. At any stage of the competition the table tells you exactly who is in contention, who has already qualified for the knockout round, and who has been eliminated — the two (or four) teams at the top advance when the league phase is complete.

When teams finish the league stage level on points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is the primary tiebreaker. NRR measures how many more (or fewer) runs per over a team has scored compared with what they have conceded across all matches — a positive NRR means a team is outscoring opponents on average, a negative NRR means they are being outscored. A large positive NRR is therefore a useful buffer: a team sitting on 12 points with +0.8 NRR has a meaningful advantage over a team on 12 points at −0.3, because the latter needs a significantly better margin of victory in later matches just to catch up. Crucially, NRR can swing dramatically in a single match — a team losing by 1 wicket off the last ball makes almost no negative dent, while a team bowled out for 80 chasing 200 takes a severe hit.

The form column (W/L/N) gives a quick visual read of recent momentum. Matches are listed right-to-left from the most recent, so a team showing W W W on the right side of the column is arriving in the business end of the competition with the most confidence. Momentum matters in knockout cricket: teams that peak at the right time — arriving at the playoffs on a winning streak — tend to be harder to beat than their raw points total might suggest. Head-to-head record between tied teams can also serve as a secondary tiebreaker in some competitions if NRR is also equal after the league stage.
