About this Ground
PSL home. Renovated to international standard in 2019. Lively atmosphere famous across Asia.
History & Significance
Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore has been Pakistan's most atmospheric ground since its completion in 1959, named after Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi following his 1974 visit to Lahore for the Islamic Summit Conference. The ground became synonymous with Pakistan cricket's golden era in the 1980s and 1990s: Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, and Wasim Akram all produced defining performances here before home crowds that turned the stadium into something between a carnival and a fortress. Pakistan's highest ever Test total — 765/6 declared against India in 2006 — was compiled on this ground in a match that demonstrated the flat, batting-friendly surface Lahore can produce. The 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus travelling to Gaddafi Stadium on the second morning of a Test match killed several police officers and wounded multiple players. The attack effectively ended international cricket in Pakistan for a decade. The stadium underwent major renovation in 2019 specifically to welcome international teams back, and the first international Test for 10 years — Pakistan versus Sri Lanka — was held here in December 2019. The return of international cricket to Lahore was celebrated across Pakistan as a symbol of the country's return to global sporting normality. The PSL's presence has maintained a high standard of facilities throughout the intervening years.
