As the match progresses, the ball wears the surface, footmarks develop around the bowling and batting crease, and the pitch cracks and crumbles in dry conditions. By day four and five on a subcontinental pitch, balls may jump from the rough or turn enormous distances, heavily favouring the fielding team.
