About this Ground
Christchurch's premier cricket ground, located adjacent to Hagley Park. Hosted the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup final.
History & Significance
Hagley Oval in Christchurch is New Zealand's newest international cricket ground, developed as a direct response to the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes that severely damaged Lancaster Park (Jade Stadium), Christchurch's historic cricket and rugby venue. The redeveloped ground opened for international cricket in 2014-15 and has since established itself as one of the most picturesque Test grounds in the world: situated on the western edge of Hagley Park, with the Christchurch Botanic Gardens visible beyond the boundary, the ground has a natural beauty that distinguishes it from purpose-built stadia. The ground achieved worldwide recognition when it hosted the 2022 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Final. Alyssa Healy's 170 off 138 balls β the highest score ever made by any batter in a World Cup final β was played here, as Australia overpowered England by 71 runs in front of a sold-out crowd. For New Zealand, Hagley Oval has become the spiritual replacement for Lancaster Park: Tests against South Africa and India have produced memorable cricket on a surface that offers genuine pace and bounce. The clean lines of the temporary stands, the park backdrop, and the Canterbury sky make it one of the most photographed grounds in international cricket.
