About this Ground
High-altitude ground known for flat pitches and big scores. RCB IPL home.
History & Significance
M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, opened in 1969 and named after the former BCCI president M. Chinnaswamy, sits at an altitude of nearly 920 metres — high enough to affect swing bowling and make the ball travel noticeably further through the thin air. The ground quickly established a reputation for flat pitches and big scoring: batsmen who struggle elsewhere tend to look magnificent here. India played some of its most competitive home cricket at Chinnaswamy during the 1980s and 1990s, most famously the 1987 World Cup group stage that brought Pakistani spectators overland to watch India versus Pakistan. The stadium's intimate layout — rectangular stands tight to the playing area on all four sides — amplifies crowd noise to a remarkable degree, and a sold-out Chinnaswamy is one of the loudest grounds in India. The T20I format amplified the ground's batting-friendly characteristics: India's 278/3 against the West Indies in 2019 remains among the highest T20I totals ever. Royal Challengers Bangalore, the IPL franchise owned by United Spirits, use Chinnaswamy as their home ground and have sold it out every season since the league's 2008 launch. Despite never winning an IPL title, RCB's fanbase is among cricket's most passionate, and the Chinnaswamy atmosphere during IPL knock-out matches is extraordinary.
