About this Ground
Largest cricket stadium in the world. Hosted 2023 ODI World Cup Final.
History & Significance
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — previously the Sardar Patel Stadium — is the largest cricket stadium in the world by capacity, able to hold 132,000 spectators after a complete rebuild that was completed in 2020. The original ground on the site dated to 1982, used primarily for domestic Ranji Trophy cricket in Gujarat. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who served as Chief Minister of Gujarat for many years, championed the redevelopment, and the venue was renamed in his honour at a ceremony attended by US President Donald Trump during his 2020 India visit — an event dubbed 'Namaste Trump' that drew an estimated crowd of over 100,000. The scale of the rebuilt stadium is staggering: four separate dressing rooms, a 76-box media box, indoor practice pitches beneath the stands, and floodlight pylons visible from across the city. The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final between India and Australia was held here on 19 November 2023. India, unbeaten through the tournament, were beaten by Australia by six wickets in a tense finale — a result that devastated the home crowd but underscored the stadium's ability to host cricket's biggest occasions. The ground is the home of the Gujarat Titans IPL franchise and regularly hosts day-night pink-ball Tests.
