Pinnaduwage Aravinda de Silva (born 1965, Colombo) was the most technically gifted and instinctively brilliant Sri Lankan batter of the 1990s. Where Jayasuriya was power and aggression, de Silva was timing, placement, and an uncanny ability to produce exceptional performances in exceptional moments. He played 93 Tests and scored 6,361 runs at 42.97 — the best average of any Sri Lankan batter until Kumar Sangakkara.
1996 World Cup Final: The Greatest Individual Performance
Sri Lanka vs Australia, Lahore, March 17, 1996. Chasing 242 to win, Sri Lanka were reduced to 23/2 when de Silva came in. He batted for 125 balls and scored 107 not out — hitting sixes, reverse sweeps, and drives of the highest class. What made it more remarkable: he had also taken 3/42 with his medium-pace off-breaks earlier. Man of the Match, Man of the Tournament. Sri Lanka won by 7 wickets and lifted the World Cup for the first time in their history.
Batting Style: Effortless Timing
De Silva was a short batter (5'4") with extraordinary technique. He got under the bouncer beautifully, pulled and hooked with timing rather than power, and drove through the off side with an elegant high elbow. He was particularly strong against spin, using his feet to attack or defend with equal facility. On difficult pitches — rank turners in India and Pakistan — he batted with greater authority than almost any contemporary.
Test Career Highlights
De Silva scored 20 Test centuries, including 167 and 168 against India (twice making over 150 in the same rubber), and his highest of 267 against New Zealand. He performed against the strongest attacks: took Australia apart at Colombo in 1992 (200 in a day session) and was consistently Sri Lanka's best performer against Pakistan, the West Indies pace attacks, and India's spinners. His Test average of 42.97 across 93 matches is outstanding for a player of his era.
Kent and County Cricket
De Silva played for Kent in English county cricket and developed his game in English conditions — seaming, swinging pitches that tested his technique and sharpened his off-side play. He scored heavily for Kent and was one of the county's most admired overseas players. The county cricket experience contributed directly to his ability to perform on challenging surfaces that Sri Lanka's home pitches did not provide.
Legacy
De Silva retired from international cricket in 2003, after which Sri Lanka cricket transitioned to the Sangakkara-Jayawardene era. His 1996 World Cup final remains the defining individual performance in World Cup history. He is one of four cricketers to score a century and take three wickets in a World Cup final — and no one else has done so unbeaten while winning the match. He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2011.
