The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) governs cricket in Bangladesh, one of the sport's fastest-growing nations. Bangladesh gained ICC full membership and Test status in 2000, having earned the right through their victory in the 1997 ICC Trophy — the pathway for associate nations to join the Test arena.

The ICC Trophy 1997

Bangladesh's cricket journey changed on 17 April 1997 when they won the ICC Trophy in Malaysia, beating Kenya in the final. This victory qualified them for the 1999 ODI World Cup and, more importantly, made the case for Bangladesh receiving Test status. Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam scored a century in their first-ever Test against India in 2000.

Test Status and Growth

Bangladesh played their first Test against India in Dhaka in November 2000. Initially, their Test results were modest. But through the 2010s, Bangladesh grew into a competitive side, regularly upsetting Test-playing nations. Their famous 2017 win over Australia in a Dhaka Test was a watershed moment.

Shakib Al Hasan is Bangladesh's greatest cricketer and has spent extended periods as the world's top-ranked Test and ODI all-rounder. He has scored 4,000+ Test runs and taken 200+ Test wickets — one of only five players to achieve this all-format double.
