The Tour That Changed Indian Cricket

India's 1971 tour of England, captained by Ajit Wadekar, changed the direction of Indian cricket. Before 1971, India had never won a Test series in England despite multiple tours stretching back to 1932. They arrived as underdogs against an England side that had beaten them at home and were expected to do so again. Instead, India won the series 1-0 — the single win coming in the final Test at The Oval — and returned home to a heroes' welcome.

The Oval Test

The Third and final Test at The Oval in August 1971 decided the series. England had the better of the first three days and were well-placed heading into the fourth. Then Bhagwath Chandrasekhar came on and took 6 for 38 in England's second innings, bowling them out for 101 and leaving India 173 to win. They made the runs with 4 wickets to spare, Farokh Engineer and Wadekar himself making key contributions. It was one of the most impactful Test victories in India's history.

In the same summer of 1971, India also beat the West Indies in the Caribbean under Wadekar's captaincy — their first Test series win there too. It was a remarkable year for Indian cricket.

Wadekar's Captaincy

Ajit Wadekar replaced Tiger Pataudi as captain for the 1971 tours and led India to wins in both the West Indies and England in the same year. This double achievement — unprecedented for India — transformed the team's self-belief and placed Indian cricket on a new trajectory. Wadekar himself was a reliable left-handed batsman but his captaincy was his defining contribution: calm, tactical, unflappable.
