David Warner's aggressive opening batting, Steve Smith's solid middle-order contributions, and the pace of Mitchell Starc (who took 22 wickets in the tournament — a World Cup record at the time) made them the most complete team in the competition. Starc's yorkers and swinging deliveries on Australian pitches were virtually unplayable at his best.

South Africa's Semi-Final Heartbreak

South Africa — again — suffered World Cup semi-final heartbreak, this time against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland. In what became one of cricket's most dramatic finishes, South Africa fell agonisingly short. A misfield and tight DLS calculations in a rain-interrupted match left South Africa needing 5 off the final ball with 5 wickets in hand — and Grant Elliott hit a six to win for New Zealand. South Africa's World Cup semi-final record became four appearances, zero finals appearances.

The Final at the MCG

The 2015 final at MCG attracted 93,013 spectators — the largest crowd for any cricket match in Australia. New Zealand scored 183 — a modest target — on a pitch that assisted seam. Australia chased with ruthless efficiency: David Warner (45), Steve Smith (56*), and James Faulkner (36*) made the run-chase look comfortable. Australia won by 7 wickets with 14.4 overs to spare — an emphatic end to New Zealand's dream tournament.

Mitchell Starc's Tournament

Starc's 22 wickets at 10.18 was the tournament's standout bowling performance. His left-arm pace, particularly his in-swinging yorker that uprooted stumps and toes, was delivered at 90+ mph consistently. Starc won the Player of the Tournament award and, alongside Pat Cummins' emergence, signalled that Australia's fast bowling resources were regenerating for future success.
