The New Ball: Overs 1-10

A new ODI ball is hard, with a pronounced, prominent seam and a shiny surface on both hemispheres. Its condition in the first 10 overs makes it the most swing-friendly it will ever be: the new ball's smooth surface allows laminar airflow on the polished side, while the seam creates turbulent airflow on the opposite side — the differential pressure from this asymmetric airflow produces conventional swing. New-ball bowlers who can maintain the seam upright (keeping it perpendicular to the ball's flight direction) and use the polish on one hemisphere can achieve 1-3 feet of lateral movement in favourable conditions.

From the batting team's perspective, the new ball is simultaneously the most dangerous (if it swings, wickets are likely) and the most productive powerplay opportunity (the fielding restriction means fewer boundary-saving fielders, making boundaries easier to find). The tension between the batting team's desire to score from the new ball and the risk of being dismissed by swing bowling creates the first 10 overs' high-stakes character. Good opening partnerships that survive the new ball without losing wickets have established the foundation for the innings — wickets lost to swing bowling in the powerplay typically have a cascading effect on the total.

The Middle-Over Ball: Overs 10-35

After approximately 15-20 overs of use, an ODI ball loses its initial swing: the surface roughens from contact with the pitch, the seam softens and is less prominent, and the polish fades on one hemisphere while the other becomes scratched. The ball enters a period of minimal lateral movement — too old and rough for conventional swing but not yet old enough for reverse swing. This is the 'dead ball' phase (overs 15-30 approximately) where the ball does the least for the bowling side. Spinners typically thrive in this phase — their effectiveness is not dependent on ball condition, and the deteriorating ball may grip the surface more as the overs accumulate.

The Reverse Swing Window: Overs 35-50

As the ball ages past approximately 35 overs, the differential between the rough and polished sides becomes pronounced enough to generate reverse swing — the aerodynamic phenomenon where the worn ball swings in the opposite direction from conventional swing. With the rough side now facing the direction of swing (reversed from the conventional physics), the old ball under specific conditions can swing dramatically and late. Pakistan bowlers, historically the most skilled practitioners of reverse swing (using both legitimate ball-care methods and, controversially, various ball-tampering methods in earlier decades), demonstrated the potential of the old ball in ODIs during the 1990s-2000s.

The 2012 ICC rule change to two new balls from each end in ODIs (one from the bowling end, one from the fielding end) fundamentally altered this aging process: with two balls, each ball only ages to approximately 25-30 overs (half the innings) before being replaced — neither ball gets old enough for reverse swing. The two-ball rule was introduced specifically to reduce the reverse swing advantage and to maintain consistent ball condition across the innings (the second ball is fresher than a single ball would be at 25 overs). The impact: reverse swing in ODIs has become almost nonexistent, fundamentally changing bowling strategy in the death overs.

Ball care as a team discipline: the fielding side's ball-care strategy (which side to polish, how to maintain the seam, which players do the polishing) is a collective effort across all 11 fielders. Players are instructed which side is the 'polished' side and which is the 'rough' side for the current ball's condition plan — even fielders at fine leg and deep square leg will be asked to maintain one side's condition by keeping it dry and smooth before throwing the ball back. Can teams change the ball if it goes out of shape?

Yes — under Law 4, the umpires can replace the ball if it becomes significantly out of shape, loses its shape from normal wear (as opposed to being deliberately altered), or is lost. The replacement ball must be of similar condition to the one it replaces — the umpires assess the match overs completed and select a replacement ball from a set of used balls that have been pre-worn to approximately the same condition. A team cannot request a brand new ball to replace an old one unless specific conditions are met (lost ball, or the umpires determine the ball is unfit for play through no fault of either side).

Does a rough pitch affect ball aging differently?

Yes — rough, dry, or dusty pitch surfaces roughen the ball faster than smooth, well-grassed pitches. Why do spinners tend to bowl in the middle overs of ODIs?

Spinners bowl most effectively in the middle overs (approximately overs 10-40) for several converging reasons: the ball in this phase is too old for conventional swing but not yet reverse swinging, making pace bowling less threatening than at the match's extremes; the pitch has had time to show whether it will assist spin (early rough, foot marks); the field restriction allows spinners to bowl defensive lines with defensive fields; and the slower ball and varying trajectory create decision points for batsmen trying to accelerate their scoring rate.
