A cricket ball is a highly engineered piece of equipment whose construction directly affects how it behaves in flight, off the pitch, and as it ages through an innings. Understanding how a cricket ball is made helps explain why seam bowling, swing, reverse swing, and spin behave as they do — each technique exploits a different physical property of the ball's construction.

Core Construction

A cricket ball has a core made from compressed cork and rubber, wound tightly with layers of twine. This core gives the ball its weight (155.9–163 grams as specified by the Laws) and hardness. The bounce a ball produces depends significantly on core density — a harder core produces more carry off the pitch.

The Leather Outer

Four pieces of premium leather — traditionally cowhide, tanned and treated — are stitched around the core in two hemispheres. The quarter seam joins the panels at 90 degrees to the main seam, holding the ball's shape. The leather is polished on one side during manufacturing and over time develops contrasting rough and smooth surfaces through play.

The Seam

The prominent raised seam — formed by 6 rows of stitching along the equator where the two leather hemispheres meet — is the most critical feature for bowlers. The seam interacts with air pressure differentials to produce movement. Holding the seam upright with backspin allows it to grip the pitch and deviate. In flight, the seam can create asymmetric airflow, causing swing.

Ball Care and Maintenance

Fielding teams are permitted to maintain the ball using sweat and saliva (though saliva has been restricted in some formats following COVID-era protocols). Shining one side and roughing the other — by natural play and rubbing on the ground — creates the aerodynamic asymmetry that produces reverse swing. Artificial interference (ball tampering) is illegal and results in a 5-run penalty.

Ball tampering — deliberately scuffing, scratching, or altering the ball using artificial means — is a serious breach of cricket's Laws and the Spirit of Cricket. Several high-profile players have received lengthy bans for this offence.
