The Cricket Ball's Life: From New to Reverse Swing and When It Changes

The New Ball
A new cricket ball has a hard cork core, a four-piece leather outer casing stitched together with a prominent seam running around the circumference, and a smooth (machine-polished) surface on both sides. The seam's prominence means it grips the surface on pitching, producing deviation off the pitch for seam bowling; the smooth leather produces aerodynamic conditions for swing through the air. The new ball is typically hardest and heaviest in the first over, offering pace bowlers maximum pace from the hard surface and maximum swing from the pristine leather differential. The new ball is most dangerous in the first 5-10 overs for these reasons: the batsmen are also new to the crease (not yet 'in') and the bowling conditions are optimal.
Ball Maintenance Across the Innings
Fielding teams actively maintain the ball to extend its useful life: the designated 'ball polishers' (usually the bowlers and fielders identified as having effective shine-maintenance technique) apply saliva or sweat to one side and rub vigorously to maintain the polish differential. The rough side is preserved by allowing it to contact the pitch on a controlled basis — the fielding side does not polish or treat it, letting natural play wear it. The shiny side maintenance is legitimate practice; any artificial alteration (scratching with nails, using bottle caps, applying foreign substances) is ball tampering under Law 41 and produces significant penalties including player suspensions.
From overs 25-40, the ball enters a 'difficult phase' for both attack and defence — it is neither new enough for conventional swing nor old enough for reverse swing, and the seam has softened enough to reduce pitch deviation. This is typically the period in a Test innings when batting is easiest — wickets are rarest and run rates are most manageable for the batting side. Captains often use this phase for their less dangerous bowlers to conserve their frontline attack for the reverse-swing phase.
The 80-Over New Ball in Tests
In Test cricket, the fielding team is entitled to take a new ball after 80 overs of the bowling innings. The decision is tactical: the old ball may be in prime reverse-swing condition (if reverse swing has developed), in which case the fielding captain might delay taking the new ball; or the batting side may be well-set and the captain wants the renewed pace and conventional swing of the new ball to break the partnership. The new ball decision is announced by the fielding captain to the umpires and is irreversible once taken — there is no reverting to the old ball if the new ball fails to perform. In limited-overs cricket (ODIs), both sides bowl with the same ball for their 50 overs with each umpire holding one ball — the two-ball ODI system (one from each end, both new at the start) was introduced in 2012 to reduce the reverse-swing advantage for fielding sides.

Dukes balls (used in England and West Indies Tests) have a more pronounced seam and are considered the best for conventional swing — England's seam bowling strength has been developed partly through familiarity with the Dukes ball. Kookaburra balls (used in Australia and South Africa Tests) have a flatter seam that wears faster, producing less conventional swing and quicker onset of reverse swing. SG balls (used in Indian subcontinent Tests) are designed for subcontinental conditions. ICC playing conditions specify which brand must be used in which country's home Tests.
Can the batting team influence which ball is used?
No — the fielding team has exclusive control over ball maintenance and the decision to take a new ball. The batting team cannot request a ball change, cannot attempt to alter the ball's condition (any deliberate interference with the ball by the batting team is also ball tampering), and cannot prevent the fielding team from taking the new ball when eligible. The umpires monitor the ball's condition and can replace it themselves if it becomes unfit for play (but the replacement is matched to the existing wear, not a new ball). The batting team's only legal 'ball interaction' is hitting it — which inadvertently roughens both sides and accelerates the ball's ageing.
Does a wet ball swing more or less than a dry ball?
A wet ball generally swings less than a dry ball in conventional swing conditions. The moisture on both sides of the ball reduces the aerodynamic differential that produces swing — if both sides are wet, the shiny/rough pressure difference diminishes. Play is typically stopped in heavy rain partly because the ball becomes difficult to control for bowling, not just because the outfield becomes dangerous. However, slightly moist conditions (humid air without rain on the ball) can enhance swing by stabilising the boundary layer of air around the ball. The atmospheric humidity is beneficial for swing; moisture directly on the ball is not.
