The Structure of a Cricket Ball
A regulation cricket ball consists of a cork core wrapped in string (tightly wound thread), enclosed in a two-piece leather case with a prominent raised seam. The seam is hand-stitched with 6 rows of stitching and is the most important structural feature for bowlers — it creates aerodynamic asymmetry that generates swing.

The Three Major Manufacturers
Dukes (UK), Kookaburra (Australia), and SG (India) are the three ICC-approved manufacturers for international cricket. Each ball behaves differently due to manufacturing differences, and their dominance in different regions is why conditions feel so different worldwide.
- Dukes: Used in England and West Indies. Harder leather, pronounced seam, swings for longer in English conditions. Preferred by seam bowlers.

Red, White, and Pink Balls
Red balls are used in Test cricket and first-class cricket. They are dyed red and have traditionally been the standard. White balls replaced red for limited-overs cricket (ODIs and T20s) because they are more visible under floodlights and against coloured clothing. However, white balls deteriorate faster than red balls.
Pink balls were introduced for Day-Night Test cricket (the first was played between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide in November 2015). Pink is visible under floodlights while retaining the hardness of a red ball. Ball Condition and Tactics
Ball maintenance is a legal and tactical science. The fielding team can polish one side of the ball with sweat (legal) but not with artificial substances (illegal — ball tampering). Keeping one side shiny and allowing the other to roughen creates the asymmetry that generates conventional swing. Once the ball is old enough, the rough side can catch air differently at high speed — reverse swing.
Ball Replacement Rules
In Tests, the fielding team can take a new ball after 80 overs. They may choose not to if the old ball is reverse swinging effectively. In ODIs, the ball is replaced if it becomes too misshapen or damaged — the on-field umpires decide based on a standard template. T20 typically uses a single ball unless it becomes damaged.
