The Cricket Bat
The cricket bat (Law 5) must be made of willow (specifically English Willow for the blade, with a cane handle). The blade cannot exceed 108mm (4.25 inches) in width and cannot exceed 965mm (38 inches) in total length including the handle. The blade depth cannot exceed 67mm and the edge cannot exceed 40mm. These dimensions mean bats cannot be arbitrarily large — attempts to use 'super' bats with oversized edges have been legislated against. A modern international bat weighs between 2lb 7oz and 2lb 12oz; heavier bats generate more power but sacrifice speed of pickup. The Cricket Ball
The cricket ball (Law 4) is made from a cork core wound with twine and covered with leather, stitched together with a prominent seam. The seam is cricket's most important technical feature — it determines how the ball moves through the air and off the pitch. Red balls: used in Tests and first-class cricket (Dukes in England, Kookaburra in Australia, SG in India). Pink balls: used in day-night Tests — treated for visibility under floodlights, with different behaviour (more lateral movement) than red balls. White balls: used in ODI and T20 cricket — lighter lacquer finish, used for 50 overs maximum (two balls used in ODIs from opposite ends to maintain condition). Pads, Gloves, and Guards
Batting pads protect the shins, knees, and thighs from the cricket ball — a 140km/h delivery on the front leg is genuinely injurious without protection. Batting gloves have thick padding on the back and fingers; the Laws require that only the glove (not the bare hand) constitute 'the hand' for the purpose of LBW and caught decisions. A ball hitting the glove is treated as hitting the bat. Inner thigh guards, arm guards, elbow guards, and chest guards are optional equipment; helmet chest guards (to prevent injuries from the ball bouncing back off helmet) have become standard.
