What Is a Cricket Bat Made Of?

A cricket bat is made from willow — specifically English willow (Salix alba var. caerulea) or Kashmir willow. English willow is considered superior for performance: softer fibres make it better for the bat-to-ball contact that generates power and feel. Kashmir willow is denser, cheaper, and used mainly for practice or lower-grade cricket.

Bat Dimensions Under the Laws

Under Law 5, a cricket bat's blade must not exceed 108 mm (4.25 inches) in width. The total bat length — including the handle — must not exceed 965 mm (38 inches). There is no minimum weight requirement, but elite bats typically range from 1.1 kg to 1.4 kg (2.4 to 3.1 lbs).

Modern bats have evolved significantly: the 'sweet spot' — the area of maximum power — has moved higher up the blade, allowing batters to play on the back foot more powerfully. Thick edges and a pronounced spine behind the blade maximise hitting power at the expense of traditional bat feel.

Bat Covering Rules

The bat blade must be of natural willow. Only traditional materials are allowed for protective facing, and any facing must not exceed 0.4 mm thick. Carbon fibre, metal, or non-traditional inserts are illegal. The bat may have stickers on the back, but they cannot be dark-coloured in a way that might confuse fielders.

Choosing the Right Bat

• Weight: lighter (1.1 kg) for quick strokeplay; heavier (1.3 kg+) for powerful hitting
• Bow: deep bow (curved blade) suits attacking play; flatter bow suits traditional technique
• Sweet spot: high sweet spot for modern T20 shots; mid sweet spot for all-round play
• Grade: Grade 1 willow (fewest grains, best performance) for top players
