The Formula and What It Measures
Batting average is the simplest and most important single number in cricket statistics: total runs divided by number of times out. A batsman who scores 1,000 runs and is dismissed 20 times has an average of 50. Not outs are excluded from the denominator, which means a batsman who finishes the innings unbeaten does not 'use up' their average on that innings. This is why tail-enders and number-elevens who never get dismissed can technically have very high averages — but the formula was designed for batsmen who bat through multiple innings. The average measures the expected runs a batsman will score each time they go in and get out.
Why Bradman's 99.94 Is a Statistical Miracle
Sir Donald Bradman's Test batting average of 99.94 is the most analysed number in cricket. The next highest career Test average belongs to Adam Voges (61.87), Graeme Pollock (60.97), and George Headley (60.83). Bradman's average is not just higher — it is more than 35% higher than the next best. If you imagine batting averages as a normal distribution, Bradman sits more than 4 standard deviations above the mean — a statistical outlier that should not exist. His final average could have been 100.00 but for his famous second-ball duck in his last Test innings at The Oval in 1948. Had he scored four, he would have averaged exactly 100. The story — that he was so moved by the standing ovation that his eyes welled up, affecting his sight — remains unverified but enduring.
What Counts as a Good Average
In Test cricket, the accepted benchmarks are: 25–35 is a competent Test-level batsman; 35–45 is a solid middle-order or top-order player; 45–50 is excellent, marking a genuine match-winner; 50+ is elite — fewer than 30 batsmen in history have maintained a 50+ Test average over 30+ innings; 60+ is legendary, belonging to Pollock, Headley, and a handful of others. In ODI cricket, averages run slightly lower because the format rewards quick runs over preservation, and batsmen face more varied conditions and match scenarios. An ODI average of 40+ is considered excellent. In T20 internationals, averages of 30+ from the top order are strong, and the format's short nature makes averages less stable.
The Limitations of Average
Average is powerful but incomplete. It does not distinguish between a fluky 50 on an easy pitch and a fighting 30 on a seaming wicket. It ignores pitch quality, bowling quality faced, home/away splits, and match importance. Steve Smith averages 59 in Tests overall but averages 84 in Australia and 47 away — a massive home advantage. Some batsmen average 40 over careers but have a pattern of big centuries and small scores, which can mask inconsistency. A batsman who scores 0, 0, 0, 100 averages 25; one who scores 25, 25, 25, 25 also averages 25 — but the second is far more reliable for a team building innings after innings.
Beyond Average: Strike Rate and Context
Modern cricket analysis uses average alongside strike rate to get a fuller picture. A Test batsman who averages 45 at a strike rate of 45 (45 runs per 100 balls) occupies significantly more overs than one who averages 45 at a strike rate of 60. In the game's modern context, the second batsman is more valuable because they apply pressure to bowlers while keeping the scoreboard moving. In T20 and ODI cricket, strike rate often matters more than average: a batsman averaging 35 at a strike rate of 140 is more valuable than one averaging 40 at 90. The relationship between average and strike rate — and the tradeoffs between them — defines one of cricket's deepest tactical discussions.
