Coming Down the Pitch: Advancing to the Spinner

Why Advance Down the Pitch

Spinners' primary weapons — turn, drift, flight — are all distance-dependent: they work at the batsman's end of the pitch (after the ball has had maximum time to spin and drift). By advancing down the pitch, the batsman meets the ball earlier — before it has fully turned, before the drift has reached its maximum deviation, and while the ball is still at a fuller length relative to the batsman's new position. This effectively converts a spinning delivery into a full-length ball hit close to where it pitched — a much more straightforward hitting position. A batsman who successfully advances neutralises the spinner's most dangerous weapon and forces the bowler to either pitch shorter (which limits spin) or accept the risk of being driven back over their head.

Footwork and Execution

Coming down the pitch correctly: the batsman moves forward off their back foot as the spinner delivers (not before the release — the trigger movement begins as the ball is released). The lead foot (left foot for a right-hander) moves decisively toward the ball's pitch point, not simply 'forward.' The head must lead — if the head stays back while feet move forward, the body is off-balance. The bat is raised early to allow a full lofted drive. At contact, the batsman should be balanced, head steady, making contact with the ball at approximately the pitch point or slightly behind. The critical element: full commitment. A half-advance that stops midway when the batsman loses confidence in their timing produces the worst of both worlds — the batsman is down the pitch, out of the crease, and cannot play the ball at a comfortable height.

The Stumping Risk

The primary risk of advancing down the pitch is stumping: if the batsman misses the ball (or mistimes it into a fielder's hands), their feet are outside the batting crease, and the wicket-keeper need only receive the ball cleanly and break the wicket before the batsman regains the crease. The keeper's preparation for the advance is therefore deliberate — great keeping against spin includes moving forward and to the side in anticipation of the advance, positioned to receive the ball at full speed without the batsman blocking their view. Top keepers (MS Dhoni, Kumar Sangakkara) are specifically noted for their stumping speed against advancing batsmen — the reflexes required are different from normal wicket-keeping (the angle and distance are different from a standard appeal).

Can you come down the pitch against pace bowling?

Yes, but it is far riskier and less common than advancing against spin. Against pace, the ball arrives much faster — the window between leaving the crease and making contact is much shorter, leaving less time for a controlled advance. The technique is occasionally used for specific purposes: a batsman who wants to force the pace bowler to change length (pushing the bowler to bowl shorter by threatening to drive), or a batsman attempting to hit a specific pace bowler down the ground against the field setting. However, a pace bowler has much more room to adjust (a faster 'follow the batsman' delivery) than a spinner, and the stumping risk against pace is lower (the keeper stands back, making stumpings against pace bowlers rare). Advancing against pace is an aggressive gamble; advancing against spin is a standard technical option.

How do spinners bowl to prevent batsmen advancing?

Spinners discourage the advance primarily through: flighting the ball (giving it more air — a ball looping high takes longer to arrive, which seems to invite advances, but a well-flighted ball that dips sharply can catch the batsman short of their intended contact point), varying pace to disrupt the timing of the advance, or bowling shorter (reducing the drive's full-toss characteristics) to make the advance produce a bat-height contact rather than a ground-level contact. Some spinners deliberately invite the advance early in a spell, then flight the next similar delivery to produce a stumping off a batsman already in advance mode. The psychological element — making the batsman unsure whether advancing is the right choice — is as important as the technical counter.

Is the 'dance down the pitch' the same as the advance?

Yes — 'dancing down the pitch,' 'advancing to the spinner,' 'coming down the pitch,' and 'charging the spinner' all refer to the same action: leaving the batting crease and moving forward to meet the ball earlier. The 'dance' description comes from the footwork required — good advances involve nimble, light footwork to reach the ball's pitch point, which at its best looks balletic. The term is most often applied to elegant or decisive advances (Virender Sehwag, AB de Villiers), while 'charging' implies a less refined, more aggressive version.
