Crease Movement in Batting: How and Why Batsmen Use the Popping Crease
The popping crease — the line 1.22 metres in front of the stumps — defines the batsman's safe ground. But batsmen actively move within and beyond this line as a technical tool: stepping down the wicket (advancing towards the bowler) to attack spinners, staying deep in the crease (moving back towards the stumps) against fast bowling, and using the crease width (moving towards off or leg stump) to manipulate the bowler's line.
