The Purpose of Footwork

Footwork in batting serves one purpose: getting the body into the optimal position to play a shot with balance, power, and control. A batsman who does not move their feet is standing in the same position for every delivery — forcing the bat to compensate for variations in length, line, and movement by reaching or falling back. A batsman who moves correctly gets into position before the ball arrives, allowing the shot to be played from a stable base with the head still. The difference between a well-hit cover drive and a thick outside edge on the same delivery is usually 20cm of foot position — the feet that arrive at the right position allow a clean, controlled stroke; the feet that don't produce a reaching, off-balance shot that the bat cannot control accurately.

Forward vs Backward Movement

Forward movement: the front foot drives down the pitch toward the ball — used for full-length deliveries (good length or fuller). The front foot comes forward to 'get to the pitch' of the ball, meaning the batsman plays the ball as close to where it bounced as possible. When a batsman gets to the pitch of a spinning delivery, the ball has not yet turned significantly — it can be played with the bat in control. When a batsman fails to get forward and plays a turning delivery away from the pitch, the ball is already deviating laterally and the bat cannot reliably reach the ball's line. Backward movement: the back foot goes back toward the stumps — used for shorter deliveries. Going back creates time and space for the pull shot, cut shot, and back-foot drive. Going back against a short ball gives the batsman more reaction time; failing to go back (standing still) against a short ball results in an uncomfortable, cramped shot.

Trigger Movements

Most elite batsmen use a 'trigger movement' — a small, preparatory foot movement as the bowler reaches the delivery stride. Trigger movements prime the feet and weight transfer for the next movement. A front-foot trigger moves weight slightly forward (a small step forward with the front foot), predisposing the batsman to drive — effective when expecting fuller deliveries. A back-foot trigger moves weight back and across (behind off-stump), predisposing the batsman to the back-foot game. Some batsmen use no trigger and move from a neutral position. Trigger movements can be exploited: a bowler who reads that a batsman has triggered forward can bowl shorter to disrupt the timing; one who reads a back-foot trigger can bowl fuller to catch the batsman's weight moving back when a full delivery requires a forward response.

The 'stuck on the crease' problem: one of the most common technical criticisms of developing batsmen is that they 'get stuck on the crease' — failing to move either forward or backward, leaving their weight in a neutral position for every delivery. A batsman on the crease must stretch to reach full deliveries (producing thin edges) and is cramped by short deliveries (producing pull shots off the glove or misses). Correcting 'stuck on the crease' is one of the primary objectives of batting coaching at every level — it requires deliberate practice of footwork patterns until they become automatic rather than conscious decisions.

The mechanics are mirrored — a left-handed batsman's front foot is the right foot (driving toward the bowler off the right foot), while a right-handed batsman's front foot is the left. The principles are identical: get forward to full deliveries, get back to short ones, maintain balance throughout, and keep the head still over the base of support. The specific footwork pattern each individual batsman uses is somewhat personal — different world-class batsmen have used notably different trigger movements and footwork styles — but the underlying principle (get into the right position before the ball arrives) is universal.

Can good footwork compensate for poor bat skill?

Footwork improves every other aspect of batting but cannot fully compensate for poor bat control.
