The Top-Edge Risk

The bowler then bowls a series of bouncers at the target batsman, attempting to induce a hook that finds one of these fielders. A batsman who abandons the hook shot when they see the trap is defended; a batsman who continues to hook into the field is at high risk. A match situation requiring no risks (the team has 9 wickets down in a Test, requiring only survival) is not the time to hook. Against a very fast bowler on a bouncy pitch, the top-edge risk is higher and the hook's risk-reward changes. Conversely, a T20 chase requiring boundaries means the hook's risk (dismissal) is worth taking because the reward (six runs) significantly advances the run rate. Can a batsman be LBW playing the hook?

A delivery rising to shoulder or head height when it reaches the batsman is, by definition, not hitting the stumps — stumps are knee-high, and a ball rising to head height will pass over them harmlessly. For LBW, the ball must be hitting the stumps below waist height when it strikes the pad. A batsman who attempts a hook but is struck on the thigh by a ball that pitched shorter than expected and stayed lower might be adjudged LBW, but the hook's nature (played to a high rising ball) means the ball's trajectory is typically too high for LBW.
