The Modern Protective Equipment Set

A fully equipped modern Test batsman wears more protective gear than any other team sport athlete other than American football or ice hockey players. The protective set: a helmet with grill (protects head, face, and some neck area); a neck guard attachment (additional protection for the back of the neck, introduced after Phil Hughes's fatal injury in 2014); gloves with padded knuckle protection; batting pads (covering knee to ankle, protecting against ball impact to legs); an inner thigh pad (additional padding for the upper inner leg, where deliveries sometimes strike from inside-out edges); a box/abdominal protector (compulsory practical protection); arm guards (protecting the forearm of the lead arm); and chest guards (protecting the torso from chest-high deliveries).

Not all batsmen wear all these items: chest guards and arm guards are optional, and the degree to which they are worn varies by batsman, conditions, and opponent. Against extreme pace on bouncy surfaces (Perth, Barbados), most batsmen wear the full suite. Against spin on flat pitches, many batsmen remove or minimise the arm guard and chest guard to maximise freedom of movement. The Phil Hughes Standard and Neck Guards

The death of Australian batsman Phil Hughes in November 2014, from a subdural haematoma caused by a ball striking the vertebral artery below the rim of his helmet, led to immediate redesign of cricket helmets. The 'gap' between the helmet's back rim and the back of the neck had been a known vulnerability — balls deflecting off the shoulder and into this gap had struck batsmen before Hughes, causing serious injuries. Post-Hughes, several manufacturers introduced neck-guard attachments (a flap of protective material attached to the helmet's rear) and wider helmet brims that better protected the back of the neck. The British Standard BS 7928:2013 was revised to include the neck-guard area in its performance testing criteria for helmets approved for cricket use.

Batting Pads: More Than Leg Protection

Batting pads serve both protective and LBW functions. The pad must protect the leg from ball impact (modern pads use multi-layer foam over rigid internal supports) but must also be sized and positioned to avoid exploiting the LBW law. Under Law 36, LBW is assessed on whether the ball would have hit the stumps — the pad's width and position determines the LBW opportunity for the bowling side. Pads that are excessively wide (covering more of the wicket than the batsman's leg would naturally protect) could shield the stumps unfairly. ICC Playing Conditions specify maximum pad dimensions, and pad manufacturers design to comply with these limits.

The 'walkabout' in protective equipment: some elite batsmen have been known for minimal protective choices — AB de Villiers often batted with lighter arm guards or none, favouring movement over protection. Similarly, some batsmen choose not to wear the chest guard against spin bowling, preferring the freedom of movement for sweep and reverse sweep shots. The trade-off is genuine: every piece of protective equipment adds weight, reduces movement flexibility, and potentially alters a batsman's timing and technique. Professional batsmen balance injury risk against performance impact based on their individual risk assessment and comfort.

Are wicket-keepers required to wear different protective equipment than batsmen?

Yes — wicket-keepers wear specialised gear. Their gloves are designed for catching (webbed, padded palm) rather than batting (flexible, dorsal-padded). Keeping pads are smaller and less structured than batting pads — designed to allow the crouching, wide-stance movement of keeping rather than the front-on driving stance of batting. Keepers also wear inner gloves (thin padded gloves worn under the keeping gloves) for additional hand protection, and typically wear a box/abdominal protector. Some keepers wear chest guards when standing up to pace bowlers. Modern keepers also wear helmets when standing up close to fast bowlers (unlike in earlier eras when keepers rarely wore helmets).

Has protective equipment changed how batsmen play technically?
