The Reverse Sweep

The reverse sweep involves the batsman switching their grip at the bottom of the stroke — instead of playing a normal sweep to the leg-side, the bottom hand rotates so the bat face sweeps in the opposite direction, sending the ball to the off-side. A right-handed batsman plays the reverse sweep by allowing the ball to arrive and then rotating the bottom hand and bat face to deflect the ball to the off-side rather than the normal leg-side sweep direction. The reverse sweep can send the ball backward square to the off-side or toward backward point. It is particularly effective against off-spinners — the ball that would normally turn away from the right-hander on the sweep (catching a toe-edge to short fine leg) is instead swept to the off-side where there may be no fielder.

The Switch Hit

The switch hit is more radical: the batsman physically changes their batting stance from right-handed to left-handed (or vice versa) during the bowler's run-up, then plays a conventional shot from the new stance. Kevin Pietersen famously played switch hits against spinners, converting himself from a right-handed to a left-handed batsman and hitting deliveries intended for a right-hander's off-side to what was now his natural on-side. The MCC reviewed the switch hit's legality in 2008 after Pietersen's switch hit in a Test match — they ruled it legal because the Laws do not specify that a batsman must maintain the same stance throughout a delivery. The fielding team cannot adjust their field once the bowler begins their delivery stride, meaning a last-moment switch hit catches the field in the wrong configuration.

Strategic Value

Both shots serve the same primary purpose: nullifying field settings by hitting the ball to where no fielder is positioned. Against a spinner with a packed leg-side field (designed to stop the sweep), a reverse sweep to the off-side goes to a region the captain did not protect. Against an off-spinner who has fielders at backward point and cover to stop the cut and drive, a switch hit converts those shots to on-side attacks that the field cannot guard. The effectiveness of both shots depends entirely on the batsman's ability to execute them consistently — a missed reverse sweep produces an LBW (the ball passes over the stumps or hits them) or a catch behind if the bat face is pointing upward. The LBW asymmetry in switch hits: when a right-handed batsman switches to a left-handed stance, the LBW law creates an asymmetry. The LBW law applies based on the batting stance at the time of impact — so a 'natural right-hander' who has switched to left-handed stance is now a 'left-handed batsman' for LBW purposes. A ball that pitches outside their new 'off-stump' (which is now to their right) cannot be LBW regardless of trajectory, because the LBW law excludes balls pitching outside the off-stump.
