Cricket Batting Stances: Why Different Positions Work for Different Players

The Three Basic Stance Types
The batting stance describes the position of the batsman's feet, body, and bat before the bowler releases the ball. The three primary categories: Open stance: the front foot (left foot for a right-handed batsman) is positioned slightly toward the off side, pointing toward mid-on or cover rather than straight down the pitch. The batsman is slightly turned to face the bowler more than a standard side-on position. Closed stance: the front foot points toward fine leg or midwicket — more toward the batsman's own leg side. The batsman's body is more turned away from the bowler. Side-on stance: the classic textbook position, where the shoulder, hip, and front foot are all aligned down the pitch toward the bowler.
Each stance creates different shot-making opportunities and limitations. An open stance makes the off-side area more visible (the batsman can see more of the ball's trajectory) and facilitates leg-side shots — the body is already rotated toward the on side. It reduces full front-foot drives because the full rotation required to drive straight through the ball is shorter from the open position. A closed stance facilitates driving through the off side (the body needs to rotate more, creating more force) but limits the leg-side view. Side-on provides balanced access to both sides.
Famous Stance Variations
Brian Lara used an extremely open stance — his front foot was angled well toward cover, giving him maximum visibility of the ball leaving the bowler's hand. This stance contributed to his extraordinary ability to play through the leg side (including his trademark flick off middle stump) and his consistency against short-pitched bowling (more natural head position to track the bouncer's trajectory). Sunil Gavaskar used a classic side-on stance that emphasised technical correctness and minimised movement before the ball was bowled. Middle stump guard places the bat behind the middle stump — a balanced position that allows the batsman to judge deliveries by where they pitch relative to their body's midline. Middle-and-leg guard moves the batsman slightly toward the off side, creating more room to play through the leg side but reducing coverage of the off stump. Leg stump guard (used by some aggressive players) maximises the space on the off side for driving but leaves the off stump exposed.
Trigger Movements
A trigger movement is the pre-delivery movement a batsman makes as the bowler enters their delivery stride. Triggers are used to pre-load the body's weight transfer for a specific shot. A back-and-across movement (shifting the back foot back and toward off stump) pre-positions the batsman to play the short ball while maintaining coverage of the off stump. A front-and-across movement (stepping toward off stump with the front foot before the ball is bowled) pre-loads the drive and commits to front-foot play. Still stance (no significant trigger) allows maximum flexibility but requires the batsman to read the delivery and commit entirely in the moment.

Does the stance matter more in some formats than others?
In T20 cricket, stance matters less because the wide range of shots required (ramps, scoops, reverse sweeps) all require moving from whatever starting position into unusual shot positions anyway. In Test cricket, the stance matters more because it determines the batsman's efficiency over a long innings — an inefficient stance that creates small mechanical inefficiencies may be sustainable for 40 balls in T20 but becomes a significant factor over a 200-ball Test innings. Test coaching emphasises stance efficiency in ways T20 batting coaching does not.
What is a 'high backlift'?
The backlift is how high the batsman raises the bat behind them before bringing it down to play the ball. A high backlift (raising the bat above waist height before delivery) generates more bat head speed through the downswing — producing more power. It also takes more time, which means the batsman must commit to the shot earlier. A low backlift reduces power but is faster, allowing the batsman to react to more deliveries before committing.
