The Eight Teams
Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder. Perth Scorchers are the most successful BBL team, with five titles. Sydney Sixers have four titles. Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat, and Adelaide Strikers have each won once.
BBL Format
Each team plays 14 regular-season matches, with a split home and away schedule. The top five teams progress to the BBL Finals: The Qualifier (1st vs 2nd), The Knockouts (3rd vs 4th and 5th vs the Qualifier loser), and The Challenger (combining the Knockout winners). The BBL Final is the culmination — typically played at a major ground in late January.
BBL Innovations
The BBL has pioneered several cricket innovations: the Power Surge (a 2-over batting team 'power surge' they can take at any point from overs 11-16, with only 2 fielders outside the ring); the X-Factor (a substitute player replacing one unused player at the 10-over mark, expanded roster flexibility); and the Bash Boost (bonus competition points for the team leading at the 10-over mark). Some of these innovations are BBL-specific and not used in other leagues.
