What Is the Big Bash League?
The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia's premier franchise T20 cricket competition, run by Cricket Australia. Launched in 2011–12 as a replacement for the state-based Twenty20 Big Bash (which ran from 2005), it uses eight city-based franchises — each affiliated with a state cricket association — and runs from December through February during the Australian summer.

Format
Each team plays in a round-robin group stage before the top four qualify for a finals series. The finals use a knockout format culminating in a BBL Final in early February. The competition has expanded its season length several times — recent seasons feature 14+ group stage matches per team.
BBL Innovations
The BBL has introduced several unique format innovations adopted before other competitions: the X-factor (replacing a player mid-innings in the power play), Bash Boost (extra points for leading at the ten-over mark), Power Surge (a second fielding restriction block chosen by the batting side), and the Bash Boost Split Innings system. These innovations add strategic complexity beyond standard T20 cricket.
Broadcast and Attendance
The BBL is broadcast on Seven Network and Foxtel/Kayo in Australia. It draws some of the largest domestic cricket crowds outside the IPL, with games in Sydney and Melbourne regularly selling out stadiums of 30,000–50,000. Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) runs concurrently and has built a strong following of its own.
