Bowling statistics in cricket are more complex than batting statistics because a bowler's effectiveness has two distinct components: their ability to take wickets and their ability to prevent runs. A bowler who takes many wickets but concedes many runs might not be as valuable as one who takes fewer wickets but is harder to score off. Bowling Average: Runs Per Wicket

Bowling average = Total runs conceded ÷ Total wickets taken. It measures the average cost (in runs) of each wicket taken. A lower bowling average means the bowler takes wickets more cheaply. In Test cricket, a bowling average below 25 is considered very good; below 22 is excellent; below 20 is exceptional. In Test cricket, economy rate is less significant because scoring rates are naturally lower (typically 2.5–3.5 runs per over) and wickets matter more than economy. Bowling Strike Rate: Balls Per Wicket

Bowling strike rate = Total balls bowled ÷ Total wickets taken. It measures how frequently a bowler takes wickets, expressed as balls between each dismissal. A lower strike rate means wickets come more frequently. In Test cricket, a bowling strike rate below 50 (a wicket every 50 balls, or roughly every 8 overs) is excellent. Below 45 is very good. Shane Warne's career strike rate was 57.4 and Muralitharan's was 55.0 — very good but the greatest wicket-takers are not necessarily the most frequent wicket-takers, since they may have bowled more overs in less favourable conditions. Combining All Three: The Complete Bowling Picture

The most effective bowling performances combine good averages, good economy, and good strike rates — but in practice, there are tradeoffs. An attacking bowler (low strike rate, takes wickets often) may concede more runs and have a higher economy. A defensive bowler (low economy, restricts scoring) may have a higher strike rate (fewer wickets per ball). In Test cricket, an attacking bowler taking wickets regularly is generally more valuable. In T20 cricket, a bowler who takes wickets while also being economical is the ideal — known as a 'wicket-taking restrictor' — and commands the highest value in franchise auction markets.
