Wind and Conventional Swing
Conventional swing relies on differential airflow across the seam-up orientation — one side of the ball (the polished side) generating lower pressure and the seam side generating higher pressure, creating lateral movement. Wind direction affects this in two primary ways: a crosswind (blowing across the pitch) pushes the ball's flight path horizontally, amplifying swing in one direction and counteracting it in the other. A headwind (bowler bowling into the wind) reduces the ball's speed but can increase seam movement by adding turbulence around the ball's surface. A tailwind (bowler with wind assistance) increases pace but may reduce swing by smoothing the airflow.
The captaincy implication: in crosswind conditions, the two bowling ends offer asymmetric swing. Wind and Spin Bowling
Spin bowling flight is directly affected by wind: a spinner bowling into a headwind can achieve more trajectory dip (the headwind decelerates the ball faster, causing it to drop steeply into the pitch — the 'flight' that spinners prize for deceiving batsmen into driving). Bowling with a tailwind increases the spinner's pace through the air but reduces dip. Cross-wind to a spinner's spinning direction can amplify drift — the lateral movement a spinner generates in flight before pitching — creating enhanced late movement that is very difficult for the batsman to read.
Shane Warne used Adelaide Oval's prevailing afternoon breeze explicitly: bowling from the Northern End in afternoon conditions, he could generate enormous drift and dip that was reportedly enhanced by the south-to-north breeze running roughly across his bowling line. Run-Up and Wind Adjustment
Fast bowlers adjust their run-up in strong wind. Bowling into a strong headwind requires additional effort to maintain pace (the wind resistance effectively adds to the energy required to reach the delivery stride) — some bowlers lengthen their run-up or extend their effort in heavy headwind conditions to compensate. Bowling with a significant tailwind, a bowler may feel artificially fast — the wind assistance carries the ball faster than their action alone would produce, which can cause the bowler to overcompensate with run-up length. Crosswind conditions do not significantly affect run-up length but can affect the bowler's balance at the crease if the crosswind is strong enough to push the body laterally.

Do captains ever choose not to bowl because wind conditions are unfavourable?
Not exactly — captains must use their bowling resources within the over allocation regardless of wind. However, end selection and bowling order are heavily influenced by wind: a captain may choose to hold their best swing bowler for the end that offers most swing assistance, or delay introducing a spinner until the wind shifts to a more helpful direction. In limited-overs cricket with fewer overs per bowler, these decisions are compressed — but in Tests, where a bowler can bowl 30+ overs per innings, the captain may deliberately rest a swing bowler for 2-3 overs to wait for cloud cover or a wind shift that will improve conditions.
Is there official wind speed guidance for stopping play?
There is no ICC regulation specifying a maximum wind speed for play continuation. The umpires assess conditions holistically — if wind is so strong that it interferes with the ball's flight to an unsafe degree (affecting the fairness of the contest) or creates physical safety risks (debris on the field, structural risk from temporary stands), they have authority to halt play under Law 2 (Umpires). This is extremely rare in practice. More commonly, strong wind merely reshapes tactical decisions without triggering a play stoppage.
Can a bowler appeal for a wind-affected no-ball or wide?
No — wind affecting a delivery's path does not create grounds for a no-ball or wide appeal. A wide is judged on whether the ball passes outside the wide line, regardless of whether the wind contributed to its trajectory. Similarly, wind has no effect on no-ball law applications. Bowlers must manage wind as a playing condition rather than appeal against it. If the wind is so extreme that deliveries are being blown significantly off course, the umpires would assess play safety — but the bowler has no right to a no-ball or wide relief simply because of wind effects.
