Every delivery in cricket is classified by its length — where it pitches relative to the batsman. This article explains the standard bowling lengths, what each length achieves, and why bowlers deliberately vary length as part of their attack.

Why Each Length Is Effective

Each length achieves specific outcomes: the yorker (full length, at the feet) is effective in the death overs of T20 cricket because it prevents the batsman from getting under the ball for a slog — the ball is too close to the feet to swing a full arc; the good-length delivery is effective in Test cricket because it creates the decision difficulty between forward and back foot — the batsman can't comfortably commit either way; the short-pitched delivery creates physical discomfort and scoring difficulty — the rising ball above chest height requires the batsman to duck, hook, or get into an awkward defensive position; and the full-length delivery (in the drive zone) is a risk for the bowler (it gives the batsman a free drive swing) but effective when it swings or seams late (the drive attempt off a late-movement delivery produces the edge-to-slip).

Mixing Lengths as a Tactical Weapon

Deliberate length variation is as important as individual length accuracy: a bowler who consistently bowls good-length deliveries becomes predictable — the batsman calibrates to that specific length and begins reading the deliveries more effectively; introducing a yorker after three good-length balls disrupts the batsman's calibrated footwork position (the front foot that was positioned for good-length deliveries is too far forward to play the yorker safely — producing a missed connection or a jamming-in-the-crease dismissal); following a short-pitched delivery that makes the batsman move back with a full-length delivery produces the opposite disruption (the back-foot position from the bouncer leaves the front foot too far back to drive effectively — producing a miscued drive off the full-length ball).
