Seam Position and Bowling Angle: How Bowlers Control Movement

What Seam Position Means

How Bowling Angle Changes Seam Effect
The bowling angle (where the bowler delivers from in the crease) changes how the seam's movement presents to the batsman: a right-arm bowler bowling from over the wicket (from the left side of the crease, to the left of the stumps when viewed from behind the bowler) creates an angle that takes the ball away from the right-handed batsman's body — the same seam position that produces outswing from over the wicket produces a slightly different trajectory from around the wicket; bowling from around the wicket (from the right side of the crease, to the right of the stumps) creates an angle that brings the ball in to the right-handed batsman's body — the inswing from around the wicket appears to swing more dramatically because it is both swinging from the release point and coming in from a wider starting angle; and the combination of wide-angle delivery (from very wide in the crease) with a specific seam position is a specific attempt to create more deceptive movement — the ball's path is harder to read when it comes from an unusual angle.
Seam Position for Specific Delivery Types
