The kinetic energy from the run-up is transferred through the delivery stride, hip rotation, shoulder rotation, and finally the arm to the ball. Research shows that removing the run-up reduces a fast bowler's pace by approximately 20-25 km/h — a 145 km/h bowler might manage 120 km/h bowling off a standing start. Marks and Calibration

Run-Up Breakdown

The spinner's run-up serves different functions: it establishes timing (ensuring the wrist is cocked at the right point), sets the body alignment (front-on for off-spin, open chest for leg-spin), and allows the bowler to land in the correct position to pivot through the delivery stride. A spinner who runs up too fast loses control of the release point — the ball tends to go too full or too short because the body has not decelerated to the spin-delivery tempo before release.
