Heat Delays and Player Safety

By 2025, extreme heat had become a significant cricket scheduling issue. Australia's domestic and international summer schedule — traditionally January to March — began incorporating heat safety protocols in 2019 following a Sheffield Shield match at the Adelaide Oval where temperatures exceeded 44°C at ground level. The ICC amended playing conditions in 2023 to allow heat delays similar to rain delays: if the wet-bulb globe temperature (a combined measure of heat and humidity) exceeded a defined threshold, play could be suspended. The 2023 Ashes Test at Lord's was briefly suspended on the second afternoon when temperatures at ground level reached 39°C — an extraordinary circumstance at a ground where cricket was historically played in overcast, cool conditions.

Flooding and Ground Damage

Lower-lying cricket grounds in England, South Asia, and the Caribbean have faced increasing flood risk. Pakistan's 2022 floods — which covered a third of the country — destroyed hundreds of cricket pitches and facilities in areas where grassroots cricket was the primary sport. The aftermath: Pakistan's domestic cricket infrastructure required two years of investment to restore. In England, several county grounds are built on floodplains: Somerset's Taunton, Worcestershire's New Road (which floods almost annually), and Derbyshire's Derby ground have all lost significant playing days to river flooding. Ground insurance costs have risen substantially across all cricket boards operating in flood-risk areas.

Schedule Changes and Timing

The traditional cricket season — which in England runs April to September and in Australia November to March — is under pressure from both ends. In England, April and September cricket is increasingly affected by unseasonably warm weather (producing dry, cracked pitches inconsistent with traditional English seaming conditions) and storm rainfall that makes early-season scheduling unreliable. In Australia, November heatwaves in Brisbane and Perth have pushed Test match scheduling adjustments. The Indian domestic cricket season — which runs through winter to avoid the monsoon — faces increasing disruption as the monsoon season extends beyond its traditional September end.

The Pitch Preparation Challenge

Pitch curators face a new set of problems from changing rainfall patterns and temperature extremes. The traditional English pitch — a slow, low surface in April that quickens and bounces more as summer progresses — depended on consistent rainfall patterns that have become less reliable. When April is dry and April temperatures are 20°C+ (historically unusual), pitches develop cracks earlier than curators expect; the ball turns from day one rather than day three, producing lower-scoring conditions that change game dynamics entirely. In Australia, higher temperatures and lower rainfall have produced pitches with harder, drier surfaces that generate more extreme pace and bounce — a factor in the recent dominance of Australian fast bowling.

Cricket's Environmental Response

Cricket's environmental response has been mixed. The ECB launched 'Cricket Counts' in 2021 — a sustainability programme targeting net-zero by 2030, including solar panels at Test grounds, electric vehicle charging at county venues, and reduced single-use plastic at all cricket events. The IPL franchises have committed to carbon-neutral operations, with JioStar and Reliance Industries investing in ground solar generation and renewable energy sourcing for stadium electricity. The ICC established an environment committee in 2022 to coordinate sustainability standards across member boards. The practical impact by 2025 remains modest: cricket's carbon footprint is dominated by international travel, which is structurally inseparable from the sport's global format. A schedule that requires teams to fly to seven continents per year cannot be carbon-neutral through solar panels and plastic reduction alone.
